Koboa: The South American 5e, PF2 and Black Flag Setting

Created by The Word Refinery

Koboa is a Tabletop RPG setting for 5e, PF2, and Black Flag created by an all South American team and based on our stories and culture. Due to the volatility of shipping prices globally right now, shipping fees for this project will be calculated at a later date once we have the best estimates for everyone. We will alert backers when shipping costs are finalized & before we charge your cards in your BackerKit pre-order. We will keep you informed all along the way!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

February Update
9 months ago – Wed, Feb 21, 2024 at 08:41:51 AM

Hello hello!

Adrián here for your February update. This month, we bring you a three more playtests:

We welcome feedback via our discord server or a direct e-mail: [email protected]

We are hard at work, with no other major updates regarding our projected releases. Carnival just happened and that kept probably over half the team occupied with the holiday. However, I have a nice preview for you, an illustration showing how Koboans might see the Koboan pantheon of gods.

Here you'll see, left to right:

Deities of Kaboa, the overworld:

  • Jul, the zealous sun, the light of truth
  • Kamau, the sky jaguar huntress
  • Hovchu, the logical, calculating, moon

Deities of Koboa, the material world:

  • Jatel, the laughing storm
  • Vavkob, mother stone
  • Veng, the weaver
  • Mangavi, the uniter

Deities of Kiboa, the underworld:

  • Hegh, the caretaker of the dead
  • Manghom, the imprisoned, raging, earth.

Until next time friends!

Adrián

January Update
10 months ago – Wed, Jan 17, 2024 at 10:25:36 AM

Hello everyone! We hope 2024 is going quite well for you all!

As a reminder, if you haven't filled in your survey yet please do so, it would be a huge help if we can reach 100% on those.

Development Status

We are pleased to report we have 100% of the text for the Koboa Core Book in our editing/sensitivity review pipeline now. Artwork assetsare at around 95% submitted and finalized. I'm constantly blown away by what is being produced for this book, and hope you all love it as much as I have been. Development has slowed down a bit due to the holidays and some personal issues the team has dealt with. I myself have had some family medical situations to attend to, and expect that I won't be getting too much Koboa stuff done for about a month or so. However, editing, layout, and art production continue.

Localization and Conversion

I'm also pleased to report that we have started out localization work to get the text of the book into Spanish, as well as converting our finalized 5e designs to Pathfinder 2e. We will hopefully have a new PF2 class ready for playtesting in the near future. We will start conversion to Black Flag soon as well. For the Portuguese localization of Koboa, we intend to work with a partner in Brazil to get the book localized and produced as nicely as possible and will hopefully have news soon.

Playtesting

Playtesting progresses, we've taken the feedback we've gotten from some of our playtest packets and are applying it to make adjustments. This month we have two new playtests for you to look at:

Playtest Packet 4 contains two Druid subclasses, the Circle of the Feral and the Circle of the Sacred Transformation, as well as the Spells used by the second subclass. Most of these spells were in our spells playtest, but I'd like to note Earth to Flesh as a new spell. Access it here.

Playtest Packet 5 contains two Bard subclasses, the College of the Storyteller and the College of Guardianship. Access it here.

We hope you enjoy the designs we've been making, and if you have any comments at all you can email us at [email protected] or join our Discord Server where you can get the playtests earlier and interact with the community.

Art!

As always, I'll leave you with an art preview I am particularly excited about, this time art for the College of the Storyteller Bard Subclass by Lucas Nascimento.

Can't wait to hear what you think,

Adrián Mejía

December Update
11 months ago – Wed, Dec 20, 2023 at 07:47:48 AM

Hey all!
December and the holiday season are upon us. We've made  great progress on making content for Koboa. More and more text goes  through our development pipeline, and we are on our last art wave with  the art assets left in the single digits.

93% of backerkit polls have been filled out. If you haven't filled yours out yet, we ask you do so when you get the chance.

Playtests

Expect more playtests to  come as we finish our editing passes for playable text. This month we  have a packet of equipment and of two barbarian subclasses for you to  playtest. Join our discord server to leave your feedback and get the playtests as soon as they are available.
Get the playtest packet here

Art Preview

We also have a special art preview from you, a beautiful scene of a joyful day in a park in Koboa.
 Happy December!

October Update!
about 1 year ago – Mon, Oct 16, 2023 at 05:59:08 AM

Hi all, here is the October update.

Big Bad Con

Several members of the Koboa team were able to attend. I (Adrián Mejía) was present, as were Dusty, Shawn, Elizabeth, Ben and Daniel. We got to share a meal together and talk life, Koboa, and a few different cultural customs.

It was great, we also got to make several connections and gather information that will hopefully help us make Koboa the biggest baddest setting we can.

It was also very tiring. (Shawn here! THIS IS A MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT! WE ARE ALL INTROVERTS!)

Progress

We've steadily been making our way through more text and more art commissions. We've started a series of two-page art spread commissions, one for each of the five territories of Koboa, which from the current drafts will look gorgeous in a hardcover book.

Happy early Día de los Difuntos!

With this holiday we celebrate in Ecuador, I thought I'd share with you one of our (still going through editing) spells that we designed for Koboa - Commune with Ancestors

Art by Ally R

3rd-level necromancy

Casting Time: 10 minutes

Range: Touch

Components: V, S, M (ritual food to offer the contacted ancestor)

Duration: 5 minutes

Classes: Bard, Cleric

You touch a creature and give it the ability to talk with one of their ancestors.

The target must name a dead creature and must be within 30 feet of the creature’s remains or one of its possessions. The target must be connected to the chosen creature in some way, whether by ancestry or family history. If these requirements are not fulfilled the spell fails. The target is able to talk to the named creature from beyond the grave for the duration of the spell. The ancestor is not magically compelled to give any information or assist the target. Once a creature has contacted a particular person with this spell, they can’t contact the same person for one year.

****

I've had some amazing roleplay moments with this spell in my playtesting games, and hope it will facilitate some poignant character moments in your games as well.
